October 2, 2001  Formula to "Just Do It."

Idea of the Week

What if there were a formula you could apply that would end procrastination? Would you use it?

Let's say that every thought you have about doing something costs you 2 incules* of your personal energy. Meaning, if you think about going to the gym, it will cost you 2 incules of your life "juice" regardless if you go or not. Therefore, each time the primary thought of "I must go to the gym" comes up:  ca-ching!  Another 2 incules down the tubes. This energy is not available to be used in creative thinking, problem-solving, positive action, or enjoying your life, because it has instead been used in repetition of a thought.

Let's also say that actually embarking on a trip to the gym will cost you 20,000 incules of energy. Clearly, heading out the door will definitely take more energy than simply thinking about going-- a lot more. This might explain the temptation to delay, because who wants to spend more of anything than they have to?

But how many times will you eventually think about your aborted plans if you don't go? How many times would you have repeated not only the same unoriginal thought, but also other  costly ones like, "Why haven't I gone?" or "I procrastinate"?

Since thoughts cross our mind at a rate of tens of thousands per hour, how much energy does thinking about doing something cost you, as opposed to simply doing it?

A caution here, please don't let the lure of analysis catch you by thinking that analysis produces energy. It too costs you, redeeming itself only if --and only if-- it results in new, fruitful decisions.

So will this formula work for you? Please test its validity for yourself. You can do this by thinking about doing something vs.actually doing it right away. Judge for yourself which approach ultimately costs you the most, and which approach holds the potential for building an energetic empire as well...

Ask yourself:

What thoughts energize me consistently? If an energizing thought were to involve future action, what gain might I receive by acting on that thought now?
